About Shauntay Grant

Shauntay Grant is a Nova Scotian writer and storyteller, and Halifax’s third Poet Laureate (2009-11). She has shared her blend of poetry and music internationally at festivals and events, and as one of Canada’s leading practitioners of spoken word performance she was awarded a Poet of Honour prize by Spoken Word Canada in 2010. A descendant of Black Loyalists, Jamaican Maroons, and Black Refugees who came to Canada during the 18th and 19th centuries, Shauntay's homegrown artistic practice embraces African Nova Scotian folk tradition as well as contemporary approaches to literature and performance. She is an award-winning author who has written and published in several literary genres, and her work has been critically acclaimed by various publications including the Globe and Mail, Quill & Quire, and Canadian Review of Materials.
