Understorey is a non-profit magazine produced in partnership with the Alexa McDonough Institute for Women, Gender and Social Justice at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax.

Our vision is to sustain a relevant, accessible, diverse, and aesthetically beautiful venue that supports and empowers women and non-binary writers and artists.

We are committed to paying every contributor while maintaining an open-access website. We work hard to send personal responses to every submission and provide editorial feedback to new and emerging writers.

Understorey Magazine is wholly funded by grants and donations. We are not financially supported by the university, advertising, submission fees, or paywalls. We therefore welcome donations of any amount. Canadian tax receipts are available for donations over $20.
